Comprehensive data on the housing conditions and residential environment were collected by interviewer observation in the intake assessment only. Data were always gathered after the first (attempt to make) personal contact, even if this attempt was unsuccessful. Thus, observational data on housing conditions is available for all target persons selected for the study (except for those who had died or moved without giving a forwarding address).

Notes on the items:

Item 11:
The entire accommodation unit was taken into consideration in as far as this could be made out from the street.

Item 12:
Buildings (complexes) that were (probably) built before 1945 count as "old buildings".

Items 13-16:
Only units which were visible from the street or identifiable through signs were coded.

Item 20:
Even when very little information was available, interviewers attempted to assign the participant to a social class on a scale from 1 (low) to 10 (high).
